The Worst Memorial Day Sale Ever (Or: Why Grass-Fed Beef Isn't On Sale)

Memorial Day is a holiday that I never know exactly how to talk about.

It's clearly a somber holiday. A time to reflect and be grateful for the sacrifices veterans have made.

But culturally it's a weekend of celebration. Barbecues, fireworks, beach parties, blockbuster movie releases, etc.

Not quite a sh*t ripping "all gas, no brakes" rager like the Fourth of July…..

But still, it's largely treated as a summer kickoff party.

I get the idea of celebrating with family and friends.

But why is our most somber national holiday also the second biggest sales event of the year after Black Friday?

My inbox is filled with like 139 promo emails with celebratory emojis offering steep discounts on (largely) imported junk. Plus a smaller (but meaningful) number of "why aren't you running a Memorial Day Sale?" questions.

How did this come to pass?

Also, why do people LOOOOOVE all the companies that do this?

These e-com brands promote their big sales and customers get all jazzed up.

Meanwhile, over here in "we go the expensive extra mile to produce the highest quality 100% Grass Fed Beef with none of the poisonous junk that people complain about all the time" land, you may have heard that we will give you a free freezer with your first half or whole beef share.

Half of the comments on any video about this are angry people complaining about the price or how the freezer isn't free or whatever.

Why the free chest freezer actually IS free (and what the gamble looks like)

But here's the thing.....

We sell beef. People eat beef. When people finish the beef they have, they buy more beef. Our beef is very good, so they tend to just buy more from us. So we put two and two together and realized that giving someone a freezer to fill is a really good gamble.

We're not just wildly generous. And if no one came back and we had to give a chest freezer away with every share forever, we'd be in trouble.

Our system hinges on building real, long-term relationships and having unbelievably delicious beef that people want to order over and over. The freezer is just betting on ourselves.

And still we get called crazy things in the comments every single day by morons who have no idea what it takes to farm, run a business, or do both simultaneously.

Well, technically Jesse does. But he gets to play with cows while I do our $#%@ing taxes, so he can deal with the comment section.

Why grass-fed beef isn't on sale (and why that's actually good news)

Meanwhile when some e-com company knocks a bazillion % off whatever they're slinging because it's Memorial Day (or national frying pan day or whatever), people line up around the digital block to thank them.

I keep getting ads for one of those cold plunge companies, offering $3,000 off this weekend (plus 36 month 0% financing, which is also built in to the price).

If a company is giving people 30% off for St Patricks Day/Memorial Day/4th of July/Labor Day/Halloween…..

IT'S BECAUSE THEY CAN AFFORD IT ALL THE TIME.

No one is out there losing money 12 pre-planned weekends a year. Their vendors and employees aren't giving them a 30% discount this week.

If our farm (any farm really) gave everyone 30% off for a week, it would be a going out of business sale.

This is why we don't run "these prices are crazy" sales.

The way to actually save money on our beef is buying more of it at once. I laid out the investment case for buying beef in bulk if you want the honest math.

If we ever have extra beef we like to do a "buy something, get a bonus cut" kind of thing. Begrudgingly we tend to plan on one around Black Friday, because otherwise we would sell nothing from November 1 through January 1.
