Annual Prepper Mode: Why Smart Families Stock Their Freezer for Winter

This week we FINALLY got a couple of sorely needed rainy days.

So we seized the opportunity by organizing and cleaning out our garage. Which kicked off our annual ritual: going full prepper mode and helping our customers stock their freezer for winter before the weather turns.

The Master Plan (And Why We're Always Behind)

Lately we’ve been getting increasingly frustrated with our order packing setup.

It is pretty tedious, takes up most of our office for most of the week, and involves way too much inefficient carrying heavy boxes back and forth.

So we’ve devised a master plan.

Build a pole barn garage, turn the current smaller garage into our full time order packing area, attach our walk-in freezer through the garage wall for easy access, free up space in our quickly getting cramped office, and conquer the beef world. And do it all before winter......

No problem.

Oh except, we also have to:

• Throw up a hoop barn to keep our endlessly expanding herd of cattle comfortable (and getting nice and fat) all winter long
• Jackhammer out and replace the concrete slab under the cows’ heated winter waterer because it was installed by two doofuses who don’t know how to use a level or finish concrete (don’t worry, I’m not being mean, Jesse and I were the doofuses)
• Make 75 more acres of hay and move it all back home
• Bring all our animals back to the home farm from the various leases they’re spread across during grazing season
• Finally install a fuel tank on the farm
• And I still need to fill my own woodshed and do 55 other things to get my old farmhouse ready

It’s a lot.

But we take winter very seriously around here, because we have to.

On a farm, being unprepared for winter is MISERABLE. Especially lately as winter has shifted towards being a long, muddy slog. Not being properly ready is brutal for us, our animals, and our machines.

So we take planning and preparation to kind of an extreme.

Not everyone needs to go full-on prepper mode to get through the winter (or maybe you should *insert tinfoil hat emoji that absolutely should exist in this day and age*).
