Quick update from here in Dirty Dog Farm World.

We are having our best sales week in two years. As in, since Jesse's reels went viral and a million people visited our old website and everything changed here on the farm.

Seventeen cows so far this week.

And it's only Thursday......

The recipe was apparently back to school season here in the Northeast (welcome back, meal-planning parents, we missed you) colliding with an Executive Order to import 660 Million Pounds of mystery meat from undisclosed countries. Turns out that combo is the perfect storm for a small farm in the Northeast selling wholesome, chemical-free, 100% Grass Fed Beef.

But while I should be popping bottles and playing Freebird, I screwed up and mentally zoomed out on what's happening here.

The thought experiment that ruined my good mood

Let's say things keep going at exactly this pace and we wind up at 35 cows in a week.

That would be absolutely mind-numbingly insane for us. We would probably buy Jackson a 30 year old hay hauling Big Rig with a CB Radio to celebrate. We would DEFINITELY be playing Freebird.

But by comparison, a single Big 4 slaughterhouse processes up to 10,000 head of cattle. Per DAY.

35 cattle is roughly what fits on ONE semi-truck cattle trailer. These big plants have 200+ trucks arriving every single day.

Run the math on their line speed, and our hypothetical best week EVER rolls past roughly every THREE minutes.

Every THREE minutes. All day long. All year long. At one plant.

And there's more than one plant.

Oh, and the extra 660 MILLION POUNDS of imported beef is still steaming toward our ports as we speak.

The sheer scale of the industrial food system is mind boggling. The raw numbers are kind of offensive just at face value.

Why the math still works in our favor

It can feel discouraging to be in the middle of an unfathomably good week, and realize your BEST case scenario is three minutes of work at a single mega-plant. Not even the tiniest dent in their monopoly.

But it does matter, because we measure different things...

Their units are tonnage, throughput, efficiency, head-per-hour.

Our unit is people like you, families like yours.

Seventeen cows is a rounding error in the Big 4's world. In ours, it's 43 families who will now be eating beef that they trust from OUR farm for an entire year.

How a rounding error becomes a real problem

There are hundreds of small farms around the country doing exactly what we do, each with their own list of families, each an individually invisible rounding error in the Big 4's world.

But the number only moves in one direction. Nobody fights their way back INTO the commodity beef system after a year of eating real beef from a farmer they know.

These 43 families aren't going back. Neither are the hundreds who came before them.

Which is how a rounding error turns into a real problem for the big guys.
